Getting Your Business And Life Going

If you find yourself going in circles and not getting anywhere with your life, personal or business, this article will help give you the power to break the endless loop.

Look at every part of whatever you want to do and find the part or parts that are being done wrong. For example, if it is your business, you would examine the marketing, employees, pricing, production, debts, expenses, etc. If it is personal, you could objectively review your attitude and character, if you are open minded, and I mean really open minded, not just think you are. Do you treat people with respect, do you think you are always right, etc. For personal issues like this, you will need someone who knows you to give you their opinion as yours will be flawed.

In a business situation, the problem is usually a combination of both a business issue and your character. If it is an aspect of your personal life, although the problem is found in your character, it probably is expressed and can be found in how you work or run your business.

It takes beginning with an assumption that everything you are doing is wrong. In business, accept that you are not capable nor adequately skilled in your field, nor in how to be a true entrepreneur. You are basically a kid who knows nothing at all. Without this sincere attitude, you will not be able to see the objective reality.

Next, you must be willing to take out the garbage and wash the floors or do anything and everything that is required to run the business. That is what I did for my stores even though I was the owner and had employees. In a relationship, you should be happy to help in any way the other person needs without thought, just respond immediately to any need.

This puts your ego in its place as a servant rather than immature master who wants to be the boss and thinks itself more capable than it actually is, or, above doing the dirty work. That attitude is guaranteed disaster. Certainly, Donald Trump can be as arrogant as he wants, but he was born into wealth. You do not have that head start and cannot afford to be selective of your tasks.

If you want to start a new business, you have to do it all yourself or you will not understand it well enough to make it succeed. When there is a problem, if you have to pay someone else to fix it, they will not do a great job, and you will spend all your capital, thus ending up with no money at the end of the year.

Find something that you can do entirely on your own to build up some capital and experience. If you cannot do it, then your first step is to learn how, get the skill to a high level, then start the business. As the business grows, then hire people to work for you.

Your life is in your hands, make sure they are clean and ready for hard work.

Imagine that you are operating on your own body, which is where you live. In this case, it is the body of your world which you are operating on, that means your life including business and personal relationships.

Our consciousness lives within our body. Nothing mystical or special about it, simply the objective fact. I am conscious but I am limited and restricted to my body. I cannot go anywhere or do anything other than with the use of my body, so I live within my body, my body is my world.

My body lives within the larger body of my life. My life comprises my home, my work, the company if I own the business, and of course, the relationships with the people close to me.

If I do not like someone, and I am in a good mood but then meet with that person, all of a sudden my mood may change. It is like going from the warm dry house out into the snow or rain, I get wet and cold, i.e. in a negative mood. My body has changed its physical condition based on entering the larger body of the environment. Likewise, coming in from the cold, I enter the body of the house and am warm and dry.

The environment, the body I am in at the moment, can be the climate and physically felt (the body of the planet), or emotional and mood altering (the events or people I am with, the body of my thoughts and emotions). Of course, your mood can be altered by the weather. All these things are the bodies your physical body goes in and out of at all times.

I live in my physical body and my body lives in the body of the building I am in or the body of the world and the weather at the moment. The climate of that building or the weather is effected by the people near me or in the room. Thus those people make, and in a way become, the body my physical body presently resides within.

My mind determines what my hands do as well as the words my mouth utters. My hands and mouth are effecting the larger body that my physical body is in. If they are dirty, and they ruin the business or home life, my whole life becomes infected and ill.

This is why I say, keep your hands and mouth clean, and you will always have perfect health in the larger body of all the things in your life.

Consciousness is cleanliness. Consciousness is awareness and respect. To succeed in your life and goals, be aware, respectful and humble. This can be summarized in one word; realistic.

Body Language in Business – How to Find the Most Important Person in the Room

Networking events. Association meetings. Conferences. Regional meetings. Trade shows. Each of these events represents an opportunity. Making the sale. Making the right connection. Exchanging business cards with the right person.

But how do you know who Mr. or Ms. Right is? Who is the person who can green light your product or service within their company?

One option is the internet. Do your research, find the bigwig’s name, do a Google Image search, and you have your target. At the event, you can scan the room until you see the person and introduce yourself.

But what if that’s not possible? What if they don’t show up? What if Google Image search pulls up nothing? What if you’re not sure who your ideal target is?

Thankfully, when this happens, you don’t have to randomly approach people and hope they are your mark. You can be a detective at all your future business meetings and use the skills of deciphering body language to discover the most important people in any group.

After speaking at an event, I went to the hotel’s lounge to relax and unwind. Wanting to enjoy some alone time, I sat in the far corner booth and began one of my favorite activities: people watching.

There was another conference at the hotel and some of their attendees came to the lounge for a social hour. At first everyone was shaking hands, welcoming one another and being very friendly. After awhile the large group started splitting up into subgroups. 5 women chatting at one table. 3 men laughing at another. 2 women standing and gossiping. But, there was one subgroup that caught my attention.

I noticed 3 gentlemen. One tall, good posture, well dressed. The second was of average height, well dressed, good posture. The third was short, had poor posture, and was – quite frankly – poorly dressed. Who is the most important person of the group?

Most people would say one of the first two gentlemen. They had strong posture, knew how to carry themselves, and their clothing reeked of success. Most people would be wrong.

After knowing a few body language basics, you would know to look more closely. While posture and clothing are good variables to observe, they are surface level indicators that can easily and consciously be altered for any situation. As a body language pro, you would want to look at the unconscious indicators to discover your alpha-person of the group.

In this case – as in most – the feet gave it away. Even though the men were standing in a circle, politely facing each other and looking at one another while they spoke, the feet pointed toward Mr. Important himself, gentleman #3. That’s right. Mr. slumped-over-I-don’t-need-to-iron-my-clothes-or-put-together-a-snazzy-outfit-like-the-rest-of-you.

The feet of the other two gentlemen were pointed directly at guy #3 like a pointing dog during the hunt. The feet give away so much information unconsciously. They almost always will point towards the direction where you want to be or towards the person you perceive to be the most important person in the conversation.(Where was Mr. Important’s feet pointing? The door.)

While initial looks might lead you to one conclusion, body language will give you the power to detect the subtleties that lead you to the truth.

Use this body language detective skill for your next meeting. If you want to converse with the “top dog” just follow the feet.

Four Business Lessons Learned As a Body Sculpting Champion

Back in October 2004 I won the Central North Island Novice Body Sculpting Championships and went on to compete in New Zealand Nationals. To achieve this I trained 7 days a week, twice a day for up to 1.5 hours at a time and monitored my nutritional intake like a hawk. I shed 15 kgs off my frame and got down to 10% body fat.

In short I applied a tremendous amount of discipline and focus to achieve this amazing result of sculpting my body into this ideal symmetrical physique the judges required.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. Would I do it again, no.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy eating chicken and broccoli 7 days a week but I’d rather not. I also don’t think being that lean is a natural state for anyone to be in for a long period of time – bones and muscle is not altogether attractive.

Plus it had never been my intention to stand on stage in a skimpy outfit, wearing 6 inch heels and bronzed up to the max, striking a variety of poses to be show of my physique. But as the competition date drew nearer, I realized I owed it to myself to enter to acknowledge and justify all the hard work I’d put in. I’m so glad I did!

What I am forever indebted to though, is the entire journey I experienced, because it proved to me that I could do anything I put my mind to.

1. Keep your eye on the end goal

I recall the moment when, standing on stage, my name was called and I was asked to step forward as one of the top 3 contestants. I realized at that moment that every single day leading up to this moment I had never contemplated losing.

There I was excited to have made it, trying to balance on these ridiculous heels and exude grace and confidence when suddenly it struck me that I may not win. I hadn’t planned for that! I set myself a goal to win that competition, I put my heart and soul into training and diet, I made a ton of sacrifices to stay on track no matter what and look what happened.

2. Apply determination liberally

It’s interesting to note that during that same year, applying that discipline and focus to other areas of my life meant they also blossomed as a result. In my new role as National Brand Manager for a major haircare company, I pulled off the best ever Hairdressing Awards in my first 3 months and increased brand performance across the board by 30% in the first year.

As if that wasn’t enough, I had also decided to take on part-time extramural study by completing a University Certificate in Fitness Management to learn more about nutrition, anatomy, physiology and exercise prescription.

Due to my 5am starts and training time I had to make creative use of my study time often reading on the exercise bike at the gym while doing a 1.5 hour low intensity workout to burn fat. I maximized the time I had by working smart and managed to get all As and even some A+s as a result.

3. You can achieve anything you put your mind to

I’m telling this story not to brag (because even I was amazed by it) but to show what amazing results anyone can achieve when they choose to.

“People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret to success”. Norman Vincent Peale

It is this belief in ourselves that makes us the entrepreneurs we are. It’s our ability to pick ourselves up when we fail, which we never plan to, and learn from it. This belief allows us to sculpt ourselves into a better person and make our business stronger.

4. Be an artist and create daily

We are sculptors at work. Constantly chiseling, scraping and polishing our creations with the help of specific tools, as Karen McGregor writes in her book ‘Sculpting the Business Body.’

Taking purposeful action each and every day towards achieving our goals means that we will achieve our success. Especially when combined with a support crew and an accountability team. Back in 2004 that was my nutritionist, my friends at the gym and my friends and family.
